Axar Patel's valiant effort to bring India back into the game was cut short by Quinton de Kock's superb direct hit in the T20 World Cup 2024 final at the Kensington Oval in Barbados on June 29.

Axar, who was in scintillating form, was dismissed for 47 off 31 balls, just when India needed his steadying presence the most.

The incident occurred in the 14th over, with Kagiso Rabada bowling. A miscommunication between the batters led to Axar being sent back. De Kock, quick on his feet, moved to his left, gathered the ball cleanly, and threw it accurately to the bowler's end, hitting the stumps directly.

Axar, caught short of his ground, had to walk back to the pavilion amidst applause for his excellent innings.

The sequence unfolded as Rabada delivered a length ball angling into Virat Kohli's body. Kohli attempted to whip it into the leg side but missed, with the ball clipping his thigh pad and rolling to de Kock's left. Spotting Axar backing up too far, de Kock seized the moment, aiming perfectly at the stumps.

The ball deflected off the stumps and into the boundary between long-off and extra cover, but the damage was already done as replays confirmed Axar was short of his ground.

With this wicket, South Africa found their rhythm back, while at the moment India are at 130 for 4 in 17 overs.
