Australia secured their passage to the Super 8s of the T20 World Cup 2024 with a dominant 9-wicket victory over Namibia in Antigua on Wednesday.
This win not only bolstered Australia's credentials as title contenders but also marked the second-largest margin of victory in T20 World Cup history, in terms of balls remaining.
Record books rewritten as Australia overwhelms Namibia in quick chase
Opting to field first, Australia's decision paid dividends as they decimated the Namibian batting order, bowling them out for a mere 72 runs in just 17 overs.
Namibia's innings never got off the ground as only two batters reached double digits. Captain Gerhard Erasmus was the lone sentinel, scoring 36 off 43 balls, but his slow start—taking 17 balls to get off the mark—mirrored his team's struggles.
The bowling accolades were snatched by leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who put on a sensational performance with figures of 4/12 from his 4 overs.
Zampa not only throttled the Namibian batting but also etched his name into the history books by becoming the first Australian to claim 100 T20I wickets.
Support came from Josh Hazlewood and Marcus Stoinis, who both took crucial wickets, further tightening the noose around Namibia.
The chase was nothing short of explosive. David Warner and Travis Head opened with a barrage of runs that set the pace for the innings. Warner’s quickfire 20 off 8 balls got Australia off to a flying start, although he fell to David Wiese in the second over.
However, there was no stopping Australia. Travis Head, with a brisk 34* off 17 balls, and Mitchell Marsh, who contributed an 18* off 9 balls, overpowered the modest target, wrapping up the game in just 5.4 overs.
This victory is now etched as the second-largest win in T20 World Cup history, measured in terms of balls remaining—an impressive 86.
This monumental win is second only to Sri Lanka's rout of the Netherlands in Chattogram in 2014, where they finished with 90 balls to spare.
The list of top five biggest wins in T20 World Cup history now reads:
S No. | Match | Year | Venue | Margin |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Sri Lanka vs Netherlands | 2014 | Chattogram | 90 balls remaining |
2 | Australia vs Namibia | 2024 | Antigua | 86 balls remaining |
3 | Australia vs Bangladesh | 2021 | Dubai | 82 balls remaining |
4 | India vs Scotland | 2021 | Dubai | 81 balls remaining |
5 | Sri Lanka vs Netherlands | 2021 | Sharjah | 77 balls remaining |
Meanwhile, Australia's commanding performance has sent a strong message to all contenders. As they move into the Super 8s, their rivals will need to muster all their resources to challenge this formidable team, which has set the bar incredibly high.
