In the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 game between India and the USA, the co-host team  had to bear a penalty of five runs for not changing over within 60 seconds for the third time. The rookie mistake happened after the 15th over of the Indian innings.

Why was USA fined 5 penalty runs?

Here's exactly how the series of events unfolded: The on-field umpire, Paul Reiffel, chatted with USA skipper Aaron Jones and explained to him that the team had been penalised for the slow change between the overs. Since this happened for the third time during this game, they were reprimanded.

What is the 5-Run penalty rule by ICC?

As ICC statement reads, in men's ODI and T20I cricket, the bowling team is awarded five penalty runs for the third time in an innings if they are not ready to bowl the next over within 60 seconds of completing the previous one.

Talking about the game, Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dube's heroics helped India have a thumping 7-wicket win over USA at New York's Nassau County International Cricket Stadium on June 12. With this, India booked a birth for the Super 8 stage.
