Australia crashed to a heavy 53-run defeat against South Africa in the second T20I of the three-match series. Chasing 219 runs to win at the Marrara Stadium in Darwin, the Australians folded up for just 165 in 17.4 overs.

While the outcome snapped Australia’s nine-match unbeaten juggernaut in T20Is, it also marked one of their biggest margin of defeats on home soil in the format.

South Africa Consign Australia To Unwanted Record

South Africa pipped Australia by 53 runs at the Marrara Stadium in Darwin to level the three-match T20I series 1-1. In the process, the Proteas also became only the second team in history to defeat Australia by a margin of more than 50 runs on Australian soil.

Batting first, an explosive 125* off just 56 balls from Dewald Brevis catapulted South Africa to a monumental 218-7 in 20 overs. In response, Tim David bludgeoned the lone half-century in the Australian run-chase as the hosts folded up for just 165, with Proteas’ Kwena Maphaka and Corbin Bosch picking up three wickets each in the innings. Here is a look at three of Australia’s heaviest T20I defeats at home.

With series now locked at 1-1, hosts Australia will now face the Aiden Markram-led South African team in the third T20I match at the Cazaly's Stadium in Cairns. The match is slated to be played on Saturday, August 16 and the action will commence from 2:45 PM IST onwards.

The series itself serves as a testing ground for both sides in T20Is in their road towards the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka early next year.
