Jhye Richardson and Pat Cummins for Australia - (Source: AFP)
In a significant development, there are reports that Australian seamer Jhye Richardson is in line to be added to the Kangaroos’ squad for the fourth Ashes Test vs England. Notably, Pat Cummins is doubtful to take part in the Boxing Day Test because of workload management.
A report from ESPN Cricinfo stated that Richardson, who recently underwent shoulder surgery, will return to the national team after missing a year of cricketing action. It is worth noting that Richardson is already with the group and trained with the Australian squad during the 3rd Test.
The Baggy Greens have already bagged the Ashes after a brilliant display in Adelaide and lead the series 3-0 with two games still in hand.
Jhye Richardson to make a remarkable return
The 29-year-old made his Test debut for Australia in 2019 but quickly fell out of plans and has featured in just three Tests since his debut, courtesy of the formidable trio of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, and Josh Hazlewood.
The left-arm seamer has 11 wickets to his name in three games. Richardson recently featured for Australia A and also missed the opening game of BBL as he was in plans to be added to the squad. Furthermore, he returned to participate in the BBL, but it now appears that he will eventually receive a well-deserved call-up.
Jhye Richardson faces competition from Michael Neser, Brendan Doggett
Cummins had missed the first two Ashes games alongside Josh Hazlewood. Eventually, Cricket Australia roped in Michael Neser and Brendan Doggett into the squad, who actually have done well in the series. Therefore, Richardson might find a place in the squad, but it will be difficult for the seamer to get a place in the playing XI.
Further, Nathan Lyon is also dealing with an injury and unlikely to play in the Boxing day Test at MCG. Todd Murphy is likely the frontrunner, alongside Corey Rocchiccioli could earn a first call-up.
