Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Friday, February 28.
Australia Reach Semifinals After No-Result Vs AFG
Australia’s high-octane Group B match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy against Afghanistan ended without a result owing to ceaseless rains at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore during the second half of the game. Afghanistan batted first and accrued 273 runs from 50 overs, with Sediqullah Atal and middle-order star Azmatullah Omarzai both clattering blistering half-centuries. For Australia, Ben Dwarshuis picked up three wickets in the innings while Spencer Johnson and Adam Zampa chipped in with two scalps each.
In response, Travis Head bludgeoned an unbeaten 59 off 40 balls to steer Australia to 109-1 in 12.5 overs before rains halted play at the venue. Nonetheless, Australia advanced to the semifinals, becoming the first side from Group B to do so.
Jos Buttler Steps Down As England Captain
Jos Buttler has decided to step down as England captain following their horrendous run at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Under his leadership, the English cricket team slipped to a 0-3 defeat in India earlier this month, and suffered humiliating defeats to Australia and Afghanistan in Champions Trophy to bow out of the tournament’s semifinals race.
He was appointed as England’s white-ball captain back in June 2022. With Buttler at the helm, the Englishmen won the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. England’s upcoming dead-rubber against South Africa on March 1 will mark Buttler’s final outing as national skipper to bring an end to his 96-match captaincy career.
Harsh Dubey Scales Huge Ranji Trophy Landmark In Final
Vidarbha spinner Harsh Dubey picked up three Kerala wickets by the end of Day 3 of the final to extend his Ranji Trophy 2025 tally to 69 scalps. Through the course of his latest spell, Vidarbha enveloped the entire Kerala innings for 342 to secure a handy 37-run first innings lead.
Moreover, Dubey also soared past Bihar spinner Ashutosh Aman to collect the highest number of wickets in a single Ranji Trophy season. Currently sitting on a pile of 69 wickets from just 19 innings, the 22-year-old has maintained an impressive bowling average of 16.98 so far in the ongoing tournament.
