The Indian team is set to return to the shortest format of international cricket. The Asia Cup is just about a month away, and the fans are on edge with hot discussions over how the squad might shape up for the tournament.

A crucial fact is that the Asia Cup will be an important preparatory ground for the Indian team for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. There are plenty of speculations and rumours going around about the return of certain players, the absence of others and also regarding the roles that will be given to the players.

In this article, we will take a look at five Asia Cup 2025 squad selection calls that might surprise the Indian fans -

5. Shivam Dube Continuing His Run In The T20I Format

Shivam Dube had a decent IPL 2025, where he scored 357 runs at an average of 32.45 and a strike rate of 132.22. The numbers show that while he was consistent with his run-scoring, he might have fallen short of the scoring rate that the modern game demands.

However, the injury to Nitish Kumar Reddy during the England tour probably creates a spot for a medium-pace bowling all-rounder. While Shivam Dube does not bowl much, he seems to be the second-best option for this spot. Also, the fact that the tournament will be played in Asian conditions and Shivam Duba is a great spin-hitter might make the management inclined towards him.

4. India Moving Ahead Of Rinku Singh

After a meteoric rise, it seems that the days of dreams are over for the KKR finisher, Rinku Singh. When the southpaw hit five consecutive sixes off the last five deliveries to win the match for KKR in IPL 2023, he became the centre of all the attention.

After this, Rinku got the national call-up and also delivered at the beginning. But recently, there has been a dip in his form, and he has not delivered as expected for his franchise in the IPL in the last couple of seasons. This probably is the reason that Rinku might get the snub for the Asia Cup 2025.

3. Yashasvi Jaiswal's Absence

The RR opener is probably going through one of the best phases as a batter. After an average start in IPL 2025, Yashasvi Jaiswal gradually picked up form and finished the tournament with 559 runs at an average of over 40 and a strike rate of nearly 159.71.

The southpaw carried his form to England and, despite the change of formats, delivered decently at the top of the order. But as it seems from the latest reports, India will be sticking to Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma as the opening pair for the Asia Cup 2025 and probably for the upcoming T20 World Cup. This comes even after Samson's injury, which has plagued his IPL 2025 campaign.

2. Shubman Gill Returning To The T20I Set Up And Probably Getting Vice-captaincy Role

Shubman Gill is having the best time in his cricketing career so far. The right-handed batter had a golden time with the bat in England, and even before that, he proved his credentials in the top order during the IPL 2025. As it stands, his performances might have had the desired impact on the selectors, and he might once again be back in the T20I set-up.

Besides, Gill, as a skipper, looked the part in the England tour. This might also have influenced the selectors to bring about a change in the captaincy role for the India T20I squad. The role now might be taken from Axar Patel and given to Gill. This, in turn, suggests that India might be thinking of Gill as the future captain shortly.

1. Jasprit Bumrah Ignoring Workload Management

There was a lot of talk about Jasprit Bumrah's workload management during the recently concluded India tour of England. Even to protect him from unwanted injuries, India played him in three of the five Test matches. This, in turn, suggested that Bumrah might be missing the Asia Cup 2025.

However, the latest reports reveal that the ace pacer might be playing in the tournament. As it stands, India might keep him in the squad and play him in the important games.
