The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced new guidelines for Team India’s overseas tours following the team's disappointing performance in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The decision comes after India suffered a heavy 1-3 series defeat, losing the prestigious trophy for the first time in a decade and failing to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) final in 2025.
What Led To The New BCCI Guidelines?
India’s loss against Australia was a major setback. Despite starting the series with a massive 295-run victory in Perth, the team struggled in the following matches, losing three out of the next four Tests. As a result, Australia secured a place in the WTC final, while India was eliminated from the race. This outcome has raised serious concerns within the BCCI about the team’s preparation and focus during tours.
During the BCCI’s recent Annual General Meeting, several issues were discussed, and new guidelines were proposed to address some of the concerns.
The meeting was attended by key figures, including Chairman of the Senior Selection Committee Ajit Agarkar, captain Rohit Sharma, and head coach Gautam Gambhir.
New Rules for Indian Players And Their Families
According to reports, the BCCI has decided to limit the time cricketers’ families can spend with them on overseas tours. The new rule allows players' wives and families to stay for a maximum of two weeks during a 45-day tour. Previously, family members were allowed to accompany players for the entire duration of the tour, which, according to the board, might have affected players’ focus.
Sources revealed that several cricketers’ wives, including Anushka Sharma (wife of Virat Kohli) and Athiya Shetty (wife of KL Rahul), were present throughout the Border-Gavaskar series. However, under the new policy, this will no longer be permitted.
In another significant change, the BCCI has made it mandatory for all players to travel together by the team bus. This move aims to promote unity and ensure better coordination within the team. In recent series, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were seen traveling separately, but this practice will now be prohibited.
