BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has extended heartfelt condolences to former Indian cricketer and head coach Anshuman Gaekwad's family and friends as the cricketer passed away recently after a prolonged battle with cancer.

Born in 1952, Anshuman Gaekwad made his debut for India in 1974. Known for his gritty and resilient batting, he played 40 Test matches and 15 ODIs for India between 1974 and 1985.  He was renowned for his defensive technique, often standing firm against some of the world's most fearsome bowlers.

After retiring from international cricket in 1987, Gaekwad continued to serve Indian cricket as a coach. His tenure as the coach of the Indian team saw significant victories, including a famous series win against Pakistan in 1999.

However, due to health issues and ageing, Anshuman Gaekwad completely sidelined himself from the world of cricket.

Meanwhile, in heartbreaking news, Anshuman Gaekwad passed away on July 31st as he lost a prolonged battle with cancer.

The former cricketer was undergoing treatment at the King's College Hospital in London and had returned back to India just last month. However, the 71-year-old breathed his last breath surrounded by family and close friends on July 31.

Interestingly, Jay Shah had ordered BCCI to release a special fund of 1 crore to fund Gaekwad's treatment before the 1983 World Cup winning team also did their part to aid the ailing cricketer's cancer treatment.
