On Sunday, July 14, BCCI secretary Jay Shah has instructed the apex cricket board of India to release a one crore fund for former India cricketer & coach Anshuman Gaekwad's cancer treatment.

Gaekwad has been battling blood cancer and is receiving treatment for the same in London for the past year at the King's College Hospital. The 71-year-old has featured in 40 Tests and 15 ODIs for India and receives a monthly pension. However, the amount is inefficient to meet the requirements of the treatment.

The BCCI was under heavy criticism as the fans and former players bashed the board for releasing 125 crore prize money for the 2024 World Cup winning squad but ignoring to offer financial assistance to Gaekwad.

Amid this criticism, News Agency ANI reported that BCCI's apex council has remarked that the board will offer a 1 crore financial assistance and Jay Shah has also spoken to Anshuman's family.

"BCCI Secretary Jay Shah instructed BCCI to release Rs 1 crore with immediate effect to provide financial assistance to India’s veteran cricketer Anshuman Gaekwad, who is battling cancer. Shah also spoke to Gaekwad's family and took stock of the situation and provided assistance," tweeted ANI.

Before this move by the BCCI, 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev and the rest of the squad had united to raise funds for Gaekwad's cancer treatment.
