Bangladesh wicketkeeper Anamul Haque has been drafted into team’s World Cup 2023 squad for their final league fixture against Australia. The 30-year-old will be replacing Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan in the line-up, considering the dynamic all-rounder was ruled out of the tournament owing to a finger injury he sustained during team’s three-wicket win over Sri Lanka.

Anamul Haque replaces Shakib Al Hasan

On November 7, i.e., four days prior to Bangladesh’s final World Cup 2023 fixture against Australia, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) drafted in Anamul Haque as outbound Shakib Al Hasan’s replacement in the squad.

The Bangladesh skipper, who pumped out a match-winning 82 and picked up two wickets against Sri Lanka, coped an injury on his index finger, which subsequently forced him out of the tournament.

While 30-year-old Anamul will be replacing Shakib Al Hasan in the team’s expanded squad, Najmul Hossain Shanto has been appointed as Bangladesh captain for their imminent game against Australia.

Bangladesh recently snapped their six-match losing streak by defeating Sri Lanka in Delhi, with captain Shakib bagging the ‘Player of the Match’ award for his all-round efforts.

Even though Shakib and co. have been already crashed out of the semi-finals race, their upcoming challenge against Australia marks a must-win one for them, considering a berth in the 2025 Champions Trophy is still up for grabs if they manage to secure a top eight finish.

Currently placed at number seven on the World Cup 2023 points table, Bangladesh team trounced Afghanistan in their tournament opener before succumbing to six straight defeats in their subsequent six fixtures.
