In various terms, the World Cup 2023 has been historic for Afghanistan. They have already floored teams like England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Netherlands, and on Tuesday, Ibrahim Zadran became the first Afghan to smash a century in World Cup history.

The 21-year-old opener hit his century off 131 deliveries, before ending the day at the office with a 143-ball 121.

Zadran opened the innings and hinted about the upcoming assault from the word go. However, he lost Rahmanullah Gurbaz early in the innings before he got assistance from Rahmat Shah in the middle. The Afghan batters stitched an 83-run stand for the second wicket, attacking the likes of Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell in the middle phase.

The right-handed opener then was accompanied by Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai, before crucial cameos from Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan helped them reach a fighting total of 292 runs in Mumbai.

Zadran's remarkable century not only set a new benchmark for Afghanistan in World Cup cricket but also etched his name in the record books as the first player from his nation to reach this milestone in the tournament's history.

Zadran's innings, characterized by technical finesse and aggressive batting, saw him amass a brilliant 129 runs off 143 balls, including 8 boundaries and 3 sixes. His century surpassed previous high scores by Afghanistan players in World Cup matches, going past Samiullah Shinwari’s 96 against Scotland in the World Cup 2015 and Zadran’s own 87 against Pakistan earlier in this tournament.

Other notable performances he outdid included Ikram Alikhil’s 86 against West Indies in the World Cup 2019 and Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s 80 against England in the current World Cup.

This milestone not only marks a personal achievement for Ibrahim Zadran but also a significant moment for Afghanistan cricket, showcasing their growing stature on the global stage. His age, 21 years and 330 days, also makes him the fourth youngest player ever to score a century in World Cup history.

This list includes players like Paul Stirling, who holds the record for the youngest at 20 years and 196 days, Ricky Ponting, and Virat Kohli, highlighting the prodigious talent of Zadran.

Thanks to Zadran's exceptional century, Afghanistan posted a massive total of 291/5 in their 50 overs. This impressive total, spearheaded by Zadran's historic knock, positions Afghanistan strongly in their quest for a semifinal berth, turning the upcoming chase into a much-anticipated and potentially thrilling encounter.
