In the latest development, Ajit Agarkar, the former India pace bowler has been appointed as the new chairman of selectors for the India men's cricket team.

There were reports circulating for the last few days that Agarkar is the front-runner for the post, and it was almost inevitable when he left the post of assistant coach with Delhi Capitals.

The cricket advisory committee, led by Sulakshana Naik, Ashok Malhotra and Jatin Paranjape conducted interviews for the post and they unanimously decided on the name of Agarkar.

A former World Cup winner, Agarkar made his India debut in 1998, and represented the nation in 191 ODIs, 26 Tests and 4 T20Is. Moreover, he still holds the record for the fastest fifty by an Indian in ODIs, a feat he achieved in 21-balls against Zimbabwe.

Apart from that, the 45-year-old held the record for being the fastest to reach 50 wickets in ODI cricket.

The position of the chairman of selectors was vacant since February, when Chetan Sharma stepped down from the post, amid the sting operation controversy.

The former India seamer has a tough task ahead of him, which includes selecting the India T20I team for the West Indies tour, and the squad for the Asia Cup. There have been speculations that the new chairman will have a discussion with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma about their position in India’s T2OI team.

Interestingly, Agarkar’s appointment means, there are two selectors from West Zone, the other being Salil Ankola.
