Former Indian seamer Ajit Agarkar has quit his post as assistant coach of the Delhi Capitals as clamour grows on his possible accession as the chief selector of the Indian Men's Cricket Team.

The Delhi Capitals social media account took to Twitter to post their good wishes for Agarkar and Shane Watson, who also quit his post as an assistant coach.

"You’ll always have a place to call home here 💙 Thank You, Ajit and Watto, for your contributions. All the very best for your future endeavours 🙌."

The development comes a day after rumour mills had it that the former India and Mumbai cricketer is the front-runner to take over the vacant post of the chairman of the selection committee of the senior Indian Men's team.

This is not the first time that Agarkar is in contention for the post.

The former right-arm swing bowler had applied for the post back in 2021, but he was eventually pipped by North Zone's Chetan Sharma, who was sacked in controversial manner earlier this year.

With the likes of Agarkar, Dilip Vengsarkar in reckoning for the top job, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) will now have to increase the remuneration, which is currently INR 1 crore for the chairman of selectors.

Agarkar represented India in 191 ODIs, 26 Tests and 4 T20Is in a near-decade long career between 1998-2007.
