In a significant development, Veteran Indian batter Ajinkya Rahane has been appointed as the captain of Mumbai for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, scheduled to take place from November 23 to December 5. Rahane’s leadership is expected to bring much-needed experience and stability to the side as Mumbai aims to make a strong impact in the tournament.

Ajinkya Rahane, who has been a stalwart for Mumbai cricket over the years, will once again don the captain’s hat. The seasoned batter, known for his calm demeanor, will lead a mix of young talent and experienced players as Mumbai begins its campaign against Goa in Hyderabad on November 24.

"Ajinkya will be leading our side in the SMAT. He has been leading the side well, and we got results in the Irani Cup as well as the ongoing Ranji season. Tushar is recovering at the NCA in Bengaluru and will return for the second leg of the Ranji Trophy, which is crucial for us. We are sticking to our core players to ensure maximum strength with Tushar, Shardul, Juned, and Mohit," the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) official told IANS.

Deshpande’s Recovery Boosts Mumbai’s Pace Attack

Meanwhile, Mumbai’s pace spearhead Tushar Deshpande is on the road to recovery after undergoing ankle surgery earlier this year. The 29-year-old, who impressed in the 2024 IPL while playing for CSK, is currently working on regaining full fitness. 

Meanwhile it is important to note that, while he is not expected to be available for the initial stages of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Mumbai’s team management remains optimistic about his potential return later in the tournament, depending on his recovery progress.

Prithvi Shaw To Play For Mumbai

One of the major highlights for Mumbai’s squad is the return of 25-year-old opener Prithvi Shaw. The talented batter, was earlier left out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad due to concerns related to fitness and discipline. However, Shaw has been included in the 28-member list of probables for the tournament, signaling a potential comeback after a hiatus.
