After pulling out of WPL auction, Jess Jonassen to miss rest of WBBL for shoulder surgery

In a significant development, Australia’s star player Jess Jonassen has pulled out of the remainder of the WBBL to undergo surgery for her injured shoulder. Notably, Jonassen, who was representing the Brisbane Heat for the ongoing WBBL, was feeling discomfort in her right shoulder for a long time before eventually deciding for surgery.

The Brisbane Heat released an official statement mentioning that the 33-year-old will undergo surgery on Monday in Brisbane Heat. Jess had managed an issue with her AC joint in her right shoulder for several months, but continued playing with the help of conservative treatment. However, in the last few games, the pain has reached concerning levels, following which the doctors decided to opt for surgery.

Notably, before pulling out of the WBBL, Jess had pulled her name out of the WPL 2026 mega-auction as she sought the WPL window from January to February to heal properly and return to 100% fitness. Although now, Jess will require a minimum of three months' recovery period.

Charli Knott to lead Brisbane Heat for WBBL 2025

Thus, there were indications that Jess might not even be able to complete the full WBBL season. In the latest events, Heats have also announced that Charli Knott will captain the side for the remaining three games in the WBBL.

“Jess and the team have worked very hard to keep her playing, and her commitment to the team has been unquestioned. The medical team has tried to manage her shoulder during the competition to help her keep playing, but it has gotten to the point where the best scenario is for surgery and give her plenty of time to return to her best ahead of next season," read the official press release.

Talking about Jess Jonassen’s performance in WBBL 2025, then she has scored 94 runs in six innings and also picked up 5 wickets in six innings.
