Jess Jonassen for Delhi Capitals - (Source: AFP)
In a significant development, former Delhi Capitals star and Australia hero Jess Jonassen has pulled out of WPL 2026. Notably, on November 27, the WPL mega-auction will take place with 277 names set to go under the hammer.
However, hours before the second mega-auction, Jonassen had pulled her name out of the auction because of injury. Notably, Jonassen has been suffering from a shoulder niggle and reportedly pulled out to recover in time.
Jonassen made her WPL debut in 2023 and has featured in 24 games for the Delhi Capitals. She has scored 295 runs and averaged 25. Even with the ball, she has 33 wickets to her name and has been a crucial figure behind the Capitals' three successful seasons.
Now, the curiosity among fans is whether Jonassen will be banned for WPL 2027 because of her pulling out of the mega-auction, which has now caused all five teams to restructure their auction strategies.
Will Jess Jonassen be banned for WPL 2027? Here's what rules say
Notably, after IPL 2024, the governing committee released new sets of rules stating strict punishments for players not registering for the auction.
Rule 1: Overseas players who make themselves unavailable for an IPL season after being bought at an auction without legitimate reasons will henceforth be penalised with two-year bans.
Rule 2: An overseas player will not be allowed to register for a mini auction if he does not register for the preceding mega auction.
Now, in Jonassen's case, rule no.2 applies to her as she has pulled out from the auction, but there is a catch. The Australia star will not be banned from WPL 2027 because she has medical reasons to skip the event, and the BCCI has given an exception that these rules will not be applied to players who have medical reasons to skip the event.
Further, even if Jess Jonassen has skipped the WPL 2026 auction due to personal reasons, she wouldn't have been banned because these rules are just for IPL and not WPL.
