In the coming time, the Indian cricket team is going to experience something new. After Roger Binny stepped down from BCCI’s President post, Jammu & Kashmir-born former Indian domestic player Mithun Manhas is all set to take the vacant seat.
Till Saturday, the situation remained uncertain, but a marathon meeting changed the scenario. With several former Indian stars in contention, Manhas is now set to take charge unopposed.
Marathon meeting sparks fresh twist in BCCI hot seat
Taking reins after former BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, Roger Binny led the highest body of the Indian cricket for almost three years before stepping down in August 2025. Now, Delhi cricketer Mithun Manhas is poised to take charge, ushering in a fresh chapter in Indian cricket’s leadership journey.
As several names were in the mix, the board decided to appoint a cricketer to the position, following the 2019 BCCI constitution guidelines based on the Supreme Court-appointed Lodha Committee’s recommendations. Sourav Ganguly, Raghuram Bhat, and Harbhajan Singh were all contenders, but it was Delhi’s Mithun Manhas who ultimately got the nod.
As reported by the Times of India, things were still not confirmed, but a high-voltage meeting on Saturday night shattered the things. Backed strongly by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, Mithun Manhas outshone the cricketing heavyweights and now stands poised to be elected as the next BCCI President.
Upcoming AGM set to seal the announcement
After the dramatic marathon meeting, Mithun Manhas filed his nomination for the post on Sunday. With the BCCI’s AGM scheduled for September 28, he is set to assume the role unopposed, becoming the first-ever leader from Jammu & Kashmir to head the board.
“It wasn't a straightforward decision for the forces in the BCCI. All the technicalities were discussed around Manhas. Legal opinion was taken in this regard. The meeting went on almost till midnight. The board found a way around to have a cricketer as the president,” a BCCI source said.
Hailing from Jammu & Kashmir, Mithun Manhas carved a remarkable career with the Delhi domestic side, leaving his mark across 157 first-class matches with memorable innings. In IPL, he donned jerseys like Delhi Daredevils, Pune Warriors, and Chennai Super Kings. From leading on the domestic pitch to now steering the BCCI, Manhas is ready to embark on an exciting new chapter in his cricketing journey.
