The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 starts on September 30, and Bangladesh is leaving no stone unturned in their preparations for the tournament in India and Sri Lanka. However, Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana announced on Monday that she will take a break from cricket after the World Cup to manage her workload and focus on her fitness.
Nigar Sultana to skip National Cricket League
Sazzad Ahmed, head of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s women’s wing, told Cricbuzz that Sultana will skip the upcoming National Cricket League (NCL) after the World Cup to recover from injuries and strengthen her fitness.
"She will not take part in the NCL after the World Cup as she wants to work on her fitness as well as make sure she recovers from her fitness," said Sazzad.
It has been reported that the 28-year-old is dealing with knee and thumb issues. Some were concerned that this could mean she won’t be fully fit for the World Cup, but Sultana explained her decision during a pre-tournament press conference.
"Every player deals with lot of things and for me that is the same and I always try to overcome everything and keep myself fit enough because I feel batting is an important area and after keeping for 50 overs if I think about scoring big I need to keep myself fit," Sultana said.
"And to make that happen you need to take some decision and recently I have taken some decision that makes me feel more fitter, " she added.
Sultana emphasized that her first priority is the national team "Ultimately my first priority is national duty and if I cannot make myself fit for that it will be harmful for the team," she said. During her break, she plans to work with a personal trainer.
Bangladesh will have warm-up matches against South Africa and Sri Lanka before opening the World Cup against Pakistan on October 2. This will be only Bangladesh’s second Women’s World Cup appearance, after finishing seventh in their first tournament in New Zealand in 2022.
