Danish Kaneria, former Pakistani cricketer asked Shaheen Afridi to take a month-long break from cricket. Following his disastrous performances against India in the latest Asia Cup encounter, Kaneria wants Afridi to take time to rejuvenate.

Kaneria suggests Afridi to focus on bowling

Shaheen Afridi returned without any wicket in Super Four match against the arch-rivals India on Sunday in Dubai. He conceded 40 runs in 3.5 overs as India comfortably won the match by six wickets. According to former Pakistani spinner Pakistan pacer should opt out of one or two formats instead of playing all to focus on his bowling.

“Age is one thing, but PCB can not have him play all three formats. They have to decide which formats he’ll play. I think he should make a decision, saying something like ‘Okay, I’ll play only T20 and ODI.’ He shouldn’t play Test cricket, because he doesn’t do much in that format."

Speaking to the IANS he suggested that Afridi should take a month-long break from cricket to work on his game. One of the mainstays of Pakistan bowling needs to rejuvenate and make a strong comeback.

“I think he should take a month-long break from cricket. Go on a vacation, relax and come back. He faded out a bit. Neither spin nor pace is working, and it feels like he’s not enjoying his cricket. I think he needs a break, a couple of months probably. If you play a lot of cricket, you tend to become stale. You need a break to come back."

Kaneria on Abhishek’s brilliance and Afridi’s misjudgement

Speaking of Afridi’s performance in the match against India, former spinner said that the bowler failed to read the batters. On the other hand, Abhishek Sharma guessed the bowler’s mentality well and played accordingly.

“Abhishek knew how Shaheen would bowl, but Shaheen failed to judge Abhishek’s tactics. That’s the difference. Shaheen has been playing for quite a long time now, and Abhishek is so new to the setup, but still he knows how bowlers’ mentality works. Shaheen doesn’t have the ability to guess the batters’ mentality.

However, Kaneria mentioned that Abhishek’s dismissal delayed the win for India. While he praised Abhishek’s sensible batting, he criticized Pakistani bowlers for being “dumb”.

“Had Abhishek not gotten out, the match would’ve finished sooner. He played sensibly. Pakistani bowlers are so dumb. Abhishek came forward to hit Shaheen for boundaries. That kid thought so brilliantly. He’s trained from Yuvraj Singh, a legend, and that was visible."

Thanks to the opening stand of 105 runs between Shubman Gill and Abhishek Sharma helped India reach the target of 172 with seven balls to spare. Gill scored 47 off just 28 deliveries whereas Abhishek amassed 74 off 39.
