Abbas Afridi has been named captain of Pakistan’s squad for the upcoming Hong Kong Sixes tournament, set to be held at the Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground in Hong Kong from November 7 to 9, 2025.

The 12-team event will showcase a fast-paced, unique format where six players bat and bowl short matches, promising high entertainment value. Pakistan is drawn in Pool C and will begin their campaign with group stage matches on November 7.

Pakistan's history in the tournament

The tournament format divides teams into four groups of three, emphasising aggressive cricket and adrenaline flow. Moreover, Hong Kong Sixes is a tournament that is renowned for its explosive style that blends cricketing skills with a festival-like atmosphere.

Previous editions have seen thrilling finishes, with Sri Lanka clinching the title in the inaugural tournament after a high-scoring final that saw Pakistan collapsing with the ball under pressure, denying them the championship. This memory adds an extra edge to Pakistan’s quest for redemption.

Abbas up for maiden captaincy stint in shortest format

For Abbas Afridi, ex-Pakistan great Umar Gul's nephew, captaincy is a promising change for Pakistan’s squad. Abbas will be a fresh face in the captaincy game with no prior experience of wearing the leader's hat.

The squad itself blends youth and versatile skill sets. With powerful batters like Abdul Samad and Mohammad Shahzad, alongside skillful bowlers such as Saad Masood, Shahid Aziz, and Abbas himself, Pakistan possesses strong match-winners capable of impactful performances on their day. The inclusion of Khawaja Mohammad Nafay and Maaz Sadaqat adds depth and balance in the 6-over affair.

Overall, Abbas Afridi’s leadership role, and the Men in Green's faith in him even after an Asia Cup 2025 snub, will help him prove his point in the long term of the country's cricketing future.
