Australia’s T20 World Cup-winning skipper and active commentator Aaron Finch dressed up as Santa prior to the BBL 2024-25 match between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers on Christmas eve. The cricketer was even spotted handing out gifts to celebrate the holiday season.

On the cricketing front, hosts Melbourne Renegades made full use of their home conditions at the Docklands Stadium by edging out Perth Scorchers in the penultimate over. Batting first, the Scorchers hauled 143-8 from 20 overs, with number three Cooper Connolly making 66 of them from just 50 deliveries.

Apart from Connolly’s top-scoring act, Matthews Spoors also made 29 in the middle order to fuel the Scorchers’ slog overs charge. For the Renegades, fast bowler Tom Rogers picked up three wickets in his four-over spell at an expense of just 22 runs. His teammates Fergus O'Neill (1-18), Kane Richardson (1-39), Will Sutherland (1-27) and Adam Zampa (1-29) also chipped in with a wicket each in the innings.

Later in the run-chase, the Melbourne Renegades consumed 19 overs and lost eight wickets to overhaul Scorchers’ total. With no significant contributions from any of the batters, sizeable cameos from Tim Seifert, Jacob Bethell and Laurie Evans sealed the deal for the hosts before BBL went off on a two-day holiday break.

The BBL 2024-25 season will now resume on ‘Boxing Day’ with a match between Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars.
