Day 2 of the first Test between India and England belonged to the hosts, as the Ben Stokes-led side triggered a collapse. Despite being in a comfortable position at one stage, India lost seven wickets for just 41 runs.

In reply, England—despite losing an early wicket—scored runs thanks to a century from Ollie Pope. Jasprit Bumrah was the sole performer for the visitors, as the right-arm seamer took three wickets on Day 2.

The 31-year-old had the chance to complete a four-wicket haul by dismissing Harry Brook in the last over of the day, but it turned out to be a no-ball. This article will look at instances when Bumrah’s overstepping proved costly for India.

1. 2017 ICC Champions Trophy Final

India had the chance to defend their Champions Trophy title in 2017 when the Men in Blue faced Pakistan in the final. Pakistan were asked to bat first and posted 338/4, courtesy of a century from Fakhar Zaman.

The southpaw scored 114 (106), including 12 fours and three sixes. However, India had a golden opportunity to dismiss Zaman early. Bumrah took what appeared to be a crucial wicket, but he had overstepped.

It is worth noting that Zaman was batting on just three runs when he edged a ball from Bumrah. The umpire reversed the decision as Jasprit had bowled a no-ball. Eventually, India lost the match by 180 runs.

2. India vs Sri Lanka, 1st ODI – 2017

In the same year, Bumrah again made headlines when he dismissed Upul Tharanga off a no-ball in the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka at the HPCA Stadium.

India, batting first, were bowled out for just 112 runs. In reply, Sri Lanka also lost two quick wickets, giving Indian fans hope. The hosts nearly got their third wicket—the big fish, Upul Tharanga—but Bumrah overstepped, and Tharanga survived.

Tharanga was batting on just 11 runs, and his dismissal would have put Sri Lanka under pressure. However, Tharanga went on to make 49 (46), including ten fours, and Sri Lanka registered a seven-wicket win.

3. India vs England, 1st Test, 2025

As mentioned above, Bumrah—who was the sole performer among the Indian bowlers on Day 2—had the chance to take his fourth wicket but overstepped at a crucial moment.

At the time of writing, play on Day 3 had resumed. Brook, who had struggled towards the end of Day 2, went all guns blazing on Day 3 and reached another Test half-century.
