Bengaluru to get a new stadium [Source: @mufaddal_vohra, @IndexBihar/X.com]
The Karnataka Cabinet has given its green signal to build a world-class sports complex and cricket stadium in Anekal, on the southern outskirts of Bengaluru. The project is estimated to cost ₹2,350 crore.
The new stadium will be located on 75 acres of land at Suryanagar Fourth Stage Extension, Indlavadi village in Anekal taluk.
According to Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H.K. Patil, the cabinet has given in-principle approval for the project and directed the Housing Department to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and conduct a viability study.
RCB likely to get a new home ground
The new stadium will boast a seating capacity of 80,000, making it one of the largest in India. But it’s not just about cricket, the sports complex will also feature facilities for 24 indoor and outdoor sports, as well as a 3,000-seat auditorium.
Once completed, this will become Karnataka’s third international cricket stadium, after the recently approved one in Mysuru and another currently being built in Tumakuru.
The proposal comes at a time when the city’s current international venue, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, is struggling with space and infrastructure issues. With a capacity of only 38,000, it’s among the smaller stadiums in major Indian cities.
Moreover, international cricket hasn’t been played at Chinnaswamy since June 2004, when a tragic stampede following RCB’s IPL victory claimed 11 lives.
Following that incident, the Justice John Michael Cunha Commission had recommended moving major cricket events to safer, better-equipped venues, a recommendation the government seems ready to act on two decades later.
That being said, since the Karnataka government is investing so much into this new project, it would be safe to assume RCB's IPL matches could shift to this venue in the future.
