The buzz surrounding the return of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to international cricket has impacted the Australia opener too. Travis Head spoke to media about the same and also backed the duo for the next ODI World Cup, ahead of India’s upcoming ODI series against Australia.
Travis Head’s admiration for Rohit and Kohli
Travis Head shared his admiration for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli when asked about their potential farewell down under. India are all set to play a three-match ODI series against Australia starting on Sunday, October 19 in Perth. Speaking to the reporters at the Optus ahead of the first ODI, Travis Head said,
"They are two quality white-ball players. Virat is probably the greatest white-ball player. Rohit is probably not far behind. He is someone who opens the batting in the same style. I have huge regard for what he has been able to do. We will miss them at some stage. But, I think they are going until 2027, aren't they? They will try to get to that World Cup. It's good for the cricket they are still playing."
Kohli and Rohit both retired from the Test cricket midway through IPL 2025 after retiring from the T20I last year after winning the T20 World Cup 2024. They clearly want to focus on the ODIs at present and with the next ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027, the speculations around the duo’s international cricket future are talk of the town. Both will return to international cricket with the first ODI down under since India’s Champions Trophy triumph in March.
Head’s eagerness to “learn from the best”
Travis Head revealed that he would be delighted to play alongside former India captain Rohit Sharma. While Rohit plays for Mumbai Indians, Head plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League. They have faced each other 23 times in international cricket apart from the multiple encounters in the IPL. Head who has often spoken of his respect for Rohit, said,
"I haven't. It's nice watching from afar someone who plays the game similarly. But, I think having played a lot of matches against him in international cricket and the IPL, he plays the game in the right way. But, I have never really had the opportunity to play with him anywhere. But, yeah, there might be an opportunity. But, like I said, he is going to play a little bit longer, he will play in India a fair bit. That opportunity might come. The way he plays the game, he opens the batting in a similar position. Why not watch the best and learn from the best?"
Notably, both teams are sweating hard in the nets ahead of the much-awaited ODI series.
