18 years back during the 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup, India and Pakistan encountered stunning upsets against Bangladesh and Ireland respectively. The group stage losses were unknown territory for both teams as they received a setback in their World Cup journey.
The 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup was one of the darkest moments in Indian and Pakistani cricket history. Both teams, ranked among favourites, were shocking early group stage casualties.
Their exits left the cricketing world in a state of shock as they lost to the underdog teams.
When India and Pakistan Faced Humiliation In 2007
India, led by Rahul Dravid, suffered an embarrassing defeat against Bangladesh in their opening match. A fiery performance from Mashrafe Mortaza restricted India to a modest total of 191 runs.
In the second inning, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mushfiqur Rahim scored a half-century each to accomplish the chase in 48.3 overs, taking home a five-wicket win.
Though they dominated a win against Bermuda, their tournament came to an end with a six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka, eliminating them in the first round.
For Pakistan, the disaster was even more heartbreaking. They faced an unexpected loss to Ireland, a team playing only its first World Cup. Chasing 133, Ireland shocked Pakistan with a three-wicket victory, knocking them out of the tournament.
Tragedy hit a day later when Pakistan's head coach, Bob Woolmer, was discovered dead in his hotel room, sending the world of cricket into shock.
That aside, the fallout from this World Cup debacle resulted in sweeping changes. India reorganised their strategy to the point where MS Dhoni became captain, eventually bringing them their 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup wins.
Pakistan also staged a comeback, capturing the 2009 T20 World Cup and then the 2017 Champions Trophy.
