Pakistan recently hosted the Champions Trophy, which was its first ICC event after a hiatus of 29 long years. The much-anticipated event didn't go as planned for PCB as they have reportedly incurred a heavy loss.
Firstly, Pakistan spend a lot of money in renovating their three stadiums. Then, India refused to travel to Pakistan for the tournament and the two boards had to agree for a hybrid model that saw 5 matches of the 15-game tournament move out of Pakistan.
Pakistan Suffer 3,320 Crores Loss After Hosting Champions Trophy
Further, out of the 10 games that were scheduled in Pakistan, several games were washed out because of rain. To sum it up, Pakistan couldn't really behave as the hosts for Champions Trophy. Coming to the financial aspect, then according to the report by The Telegraph, Pakistan have suffered a loss of 7,445 crores.
As reported by The Telegraph, the PCB spent PKR 18 billion (around Rs 4,823 crore) on renovating stadiums, which was 50 per cent over budget. They also set aside an extra $40 million (about Rs 3,320 crore) for event preparations. Unfortunately, the revenue from hosting fees and ticket sales only reached Rs498 crore, leading to a staggering loss of Rs 7,445 crore for the country.
Pakistan's Early Exit Also Contributed To Significant Loss
Despite being the hosts for Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan suffered an early exit and crashed out of group stage. It is worth noting that Pakistan played only a solitary match at their home as their tie against India was in Dubai and one of their matches got washed off because of rain.
With lesser home games for Pakistan, there wasn't much broadcasting hype and they had sponsorship issues as well.
