Travis Head has been the star of the show for Australia in the three Test matches of the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy. He has notched up two hundreds so far and has dominated India with his aggressive strokeplay. He is the leading run-scorer in the series so far with 409 runs in three Test matches and when he appeared to struggle on the final day with a possible groin injury, it raised quite a few eyebrows.
Pat Cummins mentioned in the press conference after the game that he has a tight squad and is likely to be fine, but if he does miss out, it would be a big blow to the Aussies. So, in case, he misses out, here are the three replacements for the fourth Test.
Sam Konstas
The 19-year-old is the latest batting prodigy in Australia. He has been brilliant in first-class cricket in his brief career and was even in the line to open for Australia before the start of the BGT. He has two hundreds and three fifties in this 11-match first-class career and has an average of 42.23.
The right-handed opener also scored a fantastic century in India's pink-ball practice match against the same bowlers that will play the fourth Test, so he is the front-runner if Travis Head misses out. In such a scenario, Nathan McSweeney would can bat in the middle order as he struggled as an opener and young Sam Konstas can fit into the XI as an opener.
Matt Renshaw
The Yorkshire born Matt Renshaw has played 14 Test matches for Australia and has been around the squad for a long time. He has been a consistent performer in domestic cricket and has 22 first-class hundreds which makes him a reliable replacement of Travis Head.
Also, Matt Renshaw has been in good form in recent times and has scored a century in first-class as well as in List A game. If he plays the Boxing Day Test, he would enter the game with a fifty under his belt in the last first-class match and a batter in form is always a handy addition in the team.
Beau Webster
The all-rounder was added into the Australian squad before the third Test as a cover for Mitchell Marsh. He did not make his debut as Marsh got fit, but if Travis Head misses out, he could be included in the XI as he was already in the squad and is a quality all-rounder.
Webster averages 37.83 in first-class cricket and has 12 centuries with 24 fifties. He has 148 wickets to his name as well, which makes him a genuine all-rounder and his inclusion can help captain Cummins with more options in the bowling department and he adds depth to the side.
In his last first-class match, Webster scored 110 runs with 61 coming in the first innings and also picked 5 wickets in the game. Therefore his inclusion could also help frontline Aussie quicks with more rest between their spells which is a necessity in a long five-match Test series.
