The race to the semi-finale of the T20 World Cup 2024 is heating up, with West Indies now emerging as one of the favourites to qualify after drubbing USA in a one-sided contest.

The Group 2 of the Super 8 is evenly poised, with three teams fighting it out for a semi-final place. While South Africa have won two out of two, there place in the semis is still in doubt. Meanwhile, England and West Indies will also fancy their chances, considering both the teams have superior net run-rates.

For USA, the doors have shut since the team has already lost the two matches they have played in the Super 8 stage.

T20 World Cup Semi-Final Qualification Scenario for Group 2

South Africa

The Proteas are one of the few teams who are yet to be defeated in this T20 World Cup. They have won both their Super 8 matches, and will be eyeing a semi-final spot with a win over West Indies. The team has a net run-rate of +0.625.

If they win Vs West Indies, they'll directly qualify for the semis. However, if they lose and England win by big margin against USA, then the Proteas will be out of the tournament. If SA lose against the Windies, they'll hope that USA could cause an upset and defeat England.

West Indies

After a win over USA, West Indies have massively improved their net run-rate (+1.814). West Indies lost against England in the opening Super 8 match, but bounced back strongly Vs USA. With a superior net run-rate, they just need a win to qualify for the semis, and not depend on other teams. However, if they lose against the Proteas, the Windies will hope that England either lose Vs USA, or win by the barest of margins.

England

England started the Super 8 stage with a huge win over the hosts, West Indies, but came under pressure against a quality South African side. As a result, their net run-rate stands at +0.412.

England will play against USA, and will fancy them beating by a huge margin to qualify. If they win by the barest of margins, then the Jos buttler led side will hope that the Proteas defeat the Windies. If England does lose against USA, they'll be all but out of the tournament. Unlike the Windies, England have to rely on the net run-rate to reach the semis.

USA

Two matches, two losses, and as a result, USA are out of the semi-finale race. They have a net run-rate of -2.908, and USA will now play their final game with the intention of spoiling England's party.
