The two-time World Cup winners, the West Indies, ruthlessly crushed a hapless USA to secure their first Super 8 win of the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Barbados on June 22. It was a dominating performance by the home team as they took full advantage of the conditions to outclass the visitors in all three facets of the game, registering a thumping nine-wicket victory.

Having lost their first Super 8 game to England, it was a must-win for the Men in Maroon. Not only did they need to win, but they also had to do so by a large margin to boost their semi-final qualification chances.

Story of the match

After being put into bat first at Barbados's Kensington Oval, the USA lost their star opener Steven Taylor (2) early. The team then lost wickets at regular intervals and was folded for 128 in 19.5 overs, with Roston Chase and Andre Russell taking three wickets each.

Chasing 129 was never going to be a problem for the West Indies. Despite starting with the new opening pair of Shai Hope and Johnson Charles, they got off to a brisk start in the Powerplay. Hope dominated the 67-run stand with Charles (15), effectively knocking the American team out of the contest.

After Charles holed out to deep mid-wicket as the only wicket to fall in the WI innings, Pooran came in and looked in a real hurry to finish the game. He was involved in an unbeaten 63-run partnership with Hope, who top-scored with 82*.

The run-chase was completed within 11 overs, with 55 balls and nine wickets to spare. Not only did they win by a significant margin, but the Men in Maroon also etched their name in the history books, recording their biggest ever win in 100-run chases.
