India's star number-four batter, Shreyas Iyer, has been one of the consistent performers on the side, who played a significant role in the first ODI against England. However, after the game, Iyer revealed that he was not supposed to be a part of the XI.
What Did Shreyas Iyer Reveal?
Indian middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer, who scored a brilliant 59 off just 36 deliveries with nine fours and two sixes while batting at a strike rate of 163.89, helped India to victory. Nonetheless, after the game, Iyer, who was interviewed by the host broadcasters, Star Sports, disclosed that he was not initially a part of the playing XI.
"I wasn't supposed to play today. Virat Kohli unfortunately got injured, I got the opportunity".
He went further to inform that Virat Kohli, who injured his knee a day before the game in Nagpur, was supposed to play, but due to unfortunate circumstances, the Mumbai-born was given the nod.
Moreover, the right-hander also revealed that he was watching a movie last night and was hoping to stay awake late but received a call from the Indian skipper Rohit Sharma informing him about his selection in the playing XI instead of Virat. This is huge in the context of the game, considering Iyer would not have received his chance if Kohli played.
India Beats England By 4 Wickets
Talking about the game, England batted first and posted 248 on the board as they were bowled out inside 48 overs with skipper Jos Buttler (52), Jacob Bethell (51) and Phil Salt (43) playing valuable knocks, while Harshit Rana on his debut and Ravindra Jadeja picked three wickets each.
Whereas, India finished the game inside 39 overs with vice-captain Shubman Gill (87) and Axar Patel (52) alongside Iyer (59) playing crucial knocks, taking India home with four wickets to spare. The second ODI of this three-match series will be played on 9th February in Cuttack.
