Rishabh Pant and Goenka - (Source : @Johns/X.com)
On Sunday, May 4, Punjab Kings hosted Lucknow Super Giants at the Dharamsala Stadium, where the Rishabh Pant-led side faced humiliation as they suffered a 50 runs defeat. Notably, Pant was under the scanner as he registered another flop show with the bat.
The southpaw, who is serving his first year in IPL away from Delhi Capitals, is not having the most memorable season both as a leader and as a batter. Talking about his stats with the bat, then the 27-year-old has scored just 128 runs in 10 matches, averaging just 12. 80. It is worth noting that the 27-year-old has scored a single fifty-plus score in this season and he has faced a lot of flak for his performance.
The fans are assuming that the captaincy has added burden on Pant's shoulders and there are cries of sacking him as the leader, so that the southpaw can focus just as a player. Notably, LSG are placed 7th on the table with just 10 points in 11 matches. Further, several players such as KL Rahul have opted to play just as a batter to focus on their performance and this article will shed light on three players who can replace Pant as LSG skipper is Sanjiv Goenka decides to sack Pant as the captain.
1. Nicholas Pooran
It is worth noting that before the start of the season, Nicholas Pooran was touted as the front-runner to lead LSG as he has been with the franchise more than Pant. Notably, Pooran joined the side in 2022 and has been with them since the inaugral season.
On top of that, Pooran has experience of playing in franchise cricket across the globe, where he has also helmed captaincy duties. He has also led West Indies, but stepped down from that role after first round exit in 2022 T20 World Cup. The bottomline is that Pooran can lead LSG and the management can refer to him.
Further, Pooran is also in great touch with the bat in IPL 2025 and is also high on confidence, unlike Rishabh Pant. Talking about Nicholas' stats, then the southpaw has scored 410 runs in 11 innings, averaging a whopping 41.
2.Aiden Markram
Another captaincy option for LSG is Aiden Markram. The South Africa veteran needs no introduction as he led the Proteas in T20 World Cup 2024 and has been the Proteas captain in Temba Bavuma's absence. Further, Markram also led Sunrisers Eastern Cape to two SA20 Titles.
It is not the end as Markram also holds a great experience of leadership in IPL as he was Sunrisers Hyderabad captain before the Men in Orange bought Pat Cummins in IPL 2024 auction.
Similar to Nicholas Pooran, Markram is also having a great season with the bat as the right-hand opener has amassed 348 runs in 11 innings, averaging 31.64.
3.Mitchell Marsh
Another underrated but deserving candidate to lead LSG is Mitchell Marsh. It is worth noting that the right-hand batter is in the form of his life as is having his best IPL season. Talking about his ongoing season, then the right-hand opener has scored 378 runs in 10 innings, averaging 37.80.
The 33-year-old holds no experience of leadership in IPL, but he has been handed a leadership role by Cricket Australia. It is worth noting that for the 2024 T20 World Cup, Mitchell Marsh was appointed as Australia captain and under his leadership, the Men in Yellow reached the super 8 round but crashed out of the tournament.
