Mitchell Marsh Named Australia Captain; Warner, Maxwell Return For T20Is Against WI

On Wednesday, Cricket Australia (CA) named a strong 14-man squad for Australia's three-match T20I series against the West Indies, where all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has been named as skipper.

Expectedly, CA has rested Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, and Mitchell Starc for the series, who have been playing non-stop cricket since the start of the ICC World Cup 2023.

This will be Marsh's maiden T20I series as captain at home, having already skippered in South Africa last year.

Opener David Warner, too, finds a place in the squad, alongside Josh Hazlewood and Marcus Stonis. Warner cut short his International League T20 (ILT20) 2024 stint, while after being dropped from ODIs, Stoinis was selected for T20Is.

Despite the recent controversy, all-rounder Glenn Maxwell has managed to keep his place in the squad.

Tim David and Josh Inglis have held on to their spots in the squad, as veterans like Matthew Wade, Adam Zampa, Travis Head, and Jason Behrendorff provide the side truckload of experience.

Fringe players like Sean Abbott, Nathan Ellis, and Matthew Short are also included with an eye on the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Chief Selector George Bailey stated that the series will help CA narrow down the squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.

"We see these matches as an opportunity to narrow down on those who may be part of the T20 World Cup squad later this year. It is likely we will use the block of six games to provide opportunity to players in some different roles and positions. We will then be keeping a close eye on the IPL before choosing a World Cup squad."

The T20Is against the West Indies commence on February 9, with the second and third encounters taking place on 11 and 13, respectively.

Australia will also face New Zealand after the conclusion of the Windies T20Is in a three-match series.
