In the third fixture of the WPL 2024 season, Gujarat Giants will clash with Mumbai Indians on Sunday at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru from 7.30 PM onwards. 

While the defending champions are coming off a staggering win in the series opener, the Giants are yet to kick off their 2024 season campaign.

Gujarat Giants women registered a mediocre season last year in WPL's inaugural season. They won only two games in the scheduled eight fixtures and finished outside the playoffs.

Regardless, with a new season and unit, the Giants will seek redemption this time.

However, days ahead of the season opener, the Giants witnessed a massive setback after Kashvee Gautam got ruled out for the entire tournament due to an injury. 

Notably, Gautam became the costliest uncapped player in WPL after Gujarat bought her for a whopping INR 2 crores in this year's auction. Accordingly, Mumbai-based all-rounder Sayali Sathgare has been named as a replacement. 

Regardless of the setback, the Gujarat Giants, led by Aussie veteran Beth Mooney, looks like a formidable lineup. The likes of Ashleigh Gardner, Phoebe Litchfield, and Sneh Rana are expected to guide the side with their respective experience.

Mumbai Indians Women

Defending champions Mumbai and Indian women kicked off the WPL 2024 season campaign on a heroic note. In the season opener against Delhi Capitals, the team registered a last ball thrilling victory owing to captain Harmanpreet Kaur and debutant Sajana's heroics. 

Kaur perished after scoring a half-century on the penultimate delivery of the game, with still five needed off the final delivery. The game shifted in DC's favour until Sajana unleashed her fury. 

That being said, Sajana is not going to save the day for MI on every given occasion. The team had the game vs DC under control yet let it slip due to mindless shot selections. 

The upcoming fixture against Gujarat Giants will be a challenging task due to the unknown territory of the opposition's squad composition. Therefore, MI must put its best foot forward to seal a victory.
