The day is nearly there when all teams will make their retention plans public, as the BCCI has granted time till November 15 to submit the lists to the apex cricket board of India. The think tanks have already begun their preparations for the upcoming season, and it's only a matter of a few hours before the strategies are out in the open.

Up until now, a lot of speculation has been made regarding the retentions and those that will be released. The pundits are working as well, analysing performances of every cricketer and decoding which star deserves to be released and retained.

However, there are a few players who have done well in the past season, but still might be released because of non-cricketing reasons. Thus, this article will shed light on those athletes.

1. Yash Dayal

RCB ended their IPL title drought in 2025 when the Rajat Patidar-led side beat the Punjab Kings to end the 18-year-long wait to get their hands on the silverware.

Yash Dayal was one of the key contributors in the season and was part of the formidable trio alongside Josh Hazlewood and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Notably, Dayal took 13 wickets in 15 games for the Challengers and had a strike-rate of 22.62.

However, reports suggest that the star left-arm seamer might be released because of his recent controversies and off-field activities.  On June 21, a woman filed a complaint against Yash Dayal for cheating her in a relationship that lasted five years. She claimed that the RCB seamer promised her marriage, but backed out, causing her emotional and physical trauma.

The lady accused Dayal of sexual assault and recently filed an FIR against the 27-year-old. In the latest events, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) pacer has now been denied interim protection. This also led to the UPT20 league banning Dayal for the 2025 edition. Thus, a similar action is expected by RCB for the upcoming season.

2. Mitchell Starc

Delhi Capitals roped in Mitchell Starc in IPL 2025 for a whopping 11.75 crores. The Australia left-arm seamer was on song for the Capitals as he picked up 14 wickets in 11 innings.

Starc helped DC win the game against RR single-handedly and also took a fifer against SRH. Despite great performance, the left-arm seamer is reported to be released for IPL 2026.

Notably, Starc refused to return for the second phase of IPL 2026, which resumed post Indo-PAK clashes at the border, which might have irked the DC management, because the Capitals were on the verge of qualification, and Starc's presence could have helped the Axar Patel-led side to qualify for the next round.

Thus, it is expected that DC rope in a more committed talent for the upcoming season to replace Starc.

3. Kagiso Rabada

Kagiso Rabada had a roller-coaster IPL 2025 as the Gujarat Titans pacer missed most of the action because of personal reasons. It was towards the business end of the tournament when it was revealed that Rabada actually served a ban for drug abuse.

South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada served a one-month suspension for using cocaine, during the SA20 league in January 2025. The ban was served in April and May 2025. He was notified of the positive result in April while playing for the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL) following which he missed the league.
