Few batters have defined the modern Ashes rivalry quite like Steve Smith. Renowned for his unorthodox technique and insatiable appetite for runs, the legendary Australian maestro has tormented England's bowlers across multiple series in both conditions, home and away.
With another Ashes series looming, this time at home through the upcoming 2025-26 edition, the Australian run-machine could very well add even more runs and centuries to his illustrious tally. In light of the upcoming Ashes 2025-26, here is a look at five of the highest scores recorded by Steve Smith in his Ashes career.
5. 143, The Oval, 2015
In the fifth and final Test of the 2015 Ashes in England, then Australian number three Steve Smith carved out his 11th Test century, his fifth Ashes ton and his second of the series by punching out a majestic 143 from 252 balls. Spending over six hours at the crease at The Oval in London, the cricketer took apart Stuart Broad, Mark Wood, Ben Stokes and others in an innings that epitomised technical mastery and mental fortitude.
Steve Smith's century also set up Australia's comprehensive win by an innings and 46 runs, making it 2-3 in the five-match series.
4. 144, Birmingham, 2019
Making his long-awaited return to the Australian whites after the infamous ball-tampering saga, Steve Smith announced his redemption with a masterful 144 that silenced doubters and reignited his legend. Making his stride in Birmingham in front of a hostile English crowd, the cricketer stroked 19 boundaries and two huge sixes from the 219 deliveries he faced in the innings.
With Australia facing a deficit of 90 runs at the halfway stage of the game, Steve Smith belted another 142 in the second innings to compile 286 for the match as Australia crushed hosts England by 251 runs to take a 1-0 lead.
3. 211, Manchester, 2019
In the fourth Test of the same 2019 Ashes series in England, Steve Smith mounted 211 runs from 319 balls with 24 fours and two huge sixes against the likes of Stuart Broad, Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes. The cricketer marked his 26th Test ton in the process, his third double hundred in the format and celebrated the occasion as Australia won the match by 185 runs.
He also belted a swift 82 from 92 balls in the second innings of the match to set up a huge 383-run target for the hosts before fast bowler Pat Cummins took over Australia's charge.
2. 215, Lord’s, 2015
Shrugging off his twin failures in Cardiff a week before, Steve Smith redeemed himself with his maiden Test double century, doing so in the second Test of the 2015 Ashes at Lord's in London. Batting at number three, the legendary right-hander scored 215 regal runs from 346 balls with 25 fours and a six, and even crafted a huge 284-run second-wicket partnership with fellow centurion Chris Rogers (173) as Australia plundered 556-8d.
He followed up with another 58 from just 48 balls in the second innings as Australia amassed 254-2d before bowlers ensured a huge series-levelling 405-run victory for the visitors.
1. 239, Perth, 2017
Steve Smith hammered down an imposing 239 from 399 balls with 30 boundaries and a six against England in the third Test of the 2017-18 Ashes series in Australia. Batting at number four, and leading Australia while being up against England's first innings total of 403, Smith's batting epic helped the hosts mount 662-9d at the WACA in Perth.
Apart from being his magnum opus, Ashes performance, his 239-run masterclass from late 2017 also continues to remain his highest score in Test cricket. Fittingly, he won the ‘Player of the Match’ award after Australia confirmed a 3-0 Ashes lead.
