CSK team in action [Source: IPLT20.com]
Afghanistan's Sediqullah Atal had a memorable outing, as he smashed a blistering knock in the Champions Trophy encounter against Australia at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium. Coming at number three, Atal stabilised Afghanistan's innings, scoring 85 runs and forming valuable stands with Ibrahim Zadran and captain Hashmatullah Shahidi.
Despite showing promising signs in the international circuit, Sediqullah Atal failed to bag an IPL contract in last year's mega auction. As the IPL 2025 nears, here are three teams that can sign him as a replacement player in case of an injury concern.
1. Chennai Super Kings
- Chennai Super Kings have a robust squad for the IPL 2025. After releasing several non-performing players, CSK signed some impactful cricketers like Rahul Tripathi, Vijay Shankar, Sam Curran and Nathan Ellis in the mega auction last year.
- However, the franchise has an injury-prone opener in Devon Conway. The New Zealand top-order batter has had frequent injury setbacks, which is why it won't be surprising if he sustains an injury before or during the tournament.
- In that case, CSK might have a look at Sediqullah Atal, who is an excellent player of fast bowling. The Afghan batter has been impressive since his debut and had a base price of INR 75 lakh in the mega auction.
2. Royal Challengers Bengaluru
- Virat Kohli's Royal Challengers Bengaluru focused on securing the services of English talents, purchasing Phil Salt, Jacob Bethell and Liam Livingstone to bolster their core for the IPL 2025.
- However, Jacob Bethell's hamstring injury has emerged as a huge concern for the Bengaluru-based franchise. As he is a left-handed batter, RCB might choose a like-for-like replacement for him if he misses the IPL 2025.
- In such a scenario, the Rajat Patidar-led unit might consider roping in Sediqullah Atal, who has looked promising for Afghanistan in white-ball cricket.
3. Rajasthan Royals
- Rajasthan Royals took some questionable retention calls, which affected them during the mega auction last year. As a result, they couldn't buy a proper replacement for Jos Buttler.
- So, they might have to use skipper Sanju Samson as an opener, despite the Indian batter enjoying stellar success at number three in the IPL. Also, Samson is currently recovering from finger surgery, while Yashasvi Jaiswal is nursing an ankle injury.
- Furthermore, given that the Royals don't have an overseas batting option apart from Shimron Hetmyer, they might bring in someone like Atal as cover if one of their top-order batters doesn't recover from injuries in time.
