Hosts England will face Pakistan in the third T20I of their four-match series at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens on Tuesday, May 28.

While the series-opener was washed out owing to ceaseless rains at Leeds last week, Jos Buttler and co. ravaged the visiting ‘Men in Green’ by 23 runs in Birmingham to go 1-0 up in the series.

Batting first, the Englishmen charted a competitive 183-7 from 20 overs courtesy of an imposing 51-ball 84 from captain Jos Buttler. Will Jacks and Jonny Bairstow also produced handy runs in the middle-over to defy an experienced Pakistani attack.

Later in the match, England fast bowlers Jofra Archer, Reece Topley and Chris Jordan as well as spinners Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid collectively demolished Pakistan at 160 to secure a 23-run win.

Ahead of England’s penultimate T20I of the series against Pakistan, here is a look at the probable playing XI for the hosts.

England captain Jos Buttler has ruled himself out of the third T20I on grounds of paternity leave. Buttler’s deputy Moeen Ali has been tasked to lead the English cricket team in his place instead.

Considering the ongoing series is England’s prelude to next week’s T20 World Cup 2024 in West Indies and USA, the team management might well decide to rest injury-prone Jofra Archer to hand an opportunity to Mark Wood in the playing XI.

If Wood indeed fills in for Archer, he will be expected to team-up with Reece Topley and Chris Jordan as England’s leading pace trio.

England’s think-tank might also bring all-rounder Sam Curran back into the field to fill in for off-duty Jos Buttler. Curran’s arrival may prompt middle-order batters Will Jacks and Jonny Bairstow to move up a spot each.
