The wait is over and the stage is set as the World Test Championship (WTC) finale will take place between defending champions, Australia, and the underdogs, South Africa at the iconic Lord's Stadium. The finale will commence on June 11 as both sides will look to win the coveted trophy.
The Aussies will start as the overwhelming favourites, as the team has quality in all departments. The 2023-2025 WTC cycle journey has not been easy for the Australian team and here is how they reached the finals of the 2-year-long tournament.
Australia's road to WTC final
Opponent | Scoreline |
England | 2-2 |
Pakistan | 3-0 |
West Indies | 1-1 |
New Zealand | 2-0 |
India | 3-1 |
Sri Lanka | 2-0 |
Competitive draw Vs England
Their first WTC assignment was against a rampant England side in 2023, and the bitter rivalry produced some of the best matches, as the series ended in a 2-2 draw. Australia won the first two Tests, with England fighting back to seal the third game.
The fourth match was a drawn affair as Australia retained the Ashes. England won the fifth Test as they received their consolation win.
Clean sweep Vs Pakistan
Their next assignment was a home Test series against the Shan Masood-led side Pakistan. Now, as expected, Pat Cummins' team decimated the Asian side and won the series, 3-0, inflicting a whitewash. They won the first Test by 360 runs, followed by a hard-earned 79-run win in the second Test and a 8-wicket victory to seal the whitewash.
Setback Vs West Indies
Australia continued the momentum from the Pakistan series and won the first game at Adelaide Vs West Indies with utmost ease. However, the second game at Gabba proved to be a nightmare for them as Shamar Joseph came out of the syllabus and Australia failed to chase down a tricky total as the Windies won a miraculous match and Joseph finished the second innings with figures of 7/68.
Comeback win Vs NZ
After a shocking loss against the Windies, Australia traveled to New Zealand and inflicted yet another whitewash as they won the first Test comfortably but fought hard in the second game to seal the series.
Revenge Vs India
India won back-to-back series Vs Australia in their backyard but this time around, Pat Cummins' team dished out a sweet revenge. They surprisingly lost the first Test match at Perth, but bounced back to seal the series, 3-1. The second Test in Adelaide went in the home teams' favour, and Brisbane witnessed a drawn affair.
The Kangaroos won the Test match in MCG and SCG to inflict a heavy defeat on the Indian team.
Clinical Vs Sri Lanka
Their last series was an away tour of Sri Lanka. This was a tricky affair but the Aussies once again prevailed as the home team looked fidgety and the visiting team won the series, 2-0.
