On Thursday, February 6, India locked horns against England in the first ODI of the three-match series at the VCA stadium in Nagpur. The match marked the return of several stars in the fifty-over format after a long time.

Notably, Mohammed Shami, Ravindra Jadeja, and Kuldeep Yadav all returned after a long time. Meanwhile, for England, Test talisman Joe Root, who is part of Three Lions' Champions Trophy squad, returned to the ODI set-up for the first time since the 2023 World Cup in India.

He had a forgetful return as Root returned to the pavilion with a low score of 19 (31). Meanwhile, this article will shed light on three reasons why Joe Root will fail in the upcoming prestigious event.

1. Lack Of Runs Post Pandemic

Joe Root has had a contrasting ODI career. Before 2019, Root was a multi-format player as he averaged 50+ in fifty-over format. However, post pandemic, Root lost his mojo and is going through a slump that is refusing to end.

It is worth noting that since 2020, Root has featured in 29 matches and amassed 685 runs, averaging just 21, which includes no century. Thus, the dip of average would be in Root's mind and going into an ICC event being low on confidence, won't do him any good.

2. Lack Of Game Time

Being out of form is one thing, and not playing enough ODIs is another. Besides going through a slump that several cricketers, including Virat Kohli, and Babar Azam, have also faced, Root hasn't played enough ODIs to gain confidence.

Root, who has made a name in Test cricket, has played just 29 ODIs, compared to 149 innings from 2013-2029.

3. No Experience Of Playing ODIs In Pakistan

Joe Root loves playing in Pakistan but in Test cricket. He has proved himself in Pakistan but is yet to play an ODI there. It is usually the case for most of the cricketers, as Pakistan hasn't hosted enough ODIs in the last decade or so.

However, for a cricketer, who lacks game time and isn't among runs in ODIs, then playing on a new surface and new country would pose an extra challenge.
