In an unfortunate incident, India's premier spin bowler Kuldeep Yadav has sustained a groin injury that might rule him out of the upcoming England ODI series. The ace spinner has been an integral part of India's ODI team over the years, emerging as their wrecker-in-chief with the ball in the middle overs.

The BCCI has stated that Kuldeep will likely be unavailable for the England ODIs, with doubts looming over his participation in the Champions Trophy. In such a scenario, India might look at some alternatives while selecting the squad for the marquee event, as mentioned below.

Yuzvendra Chahal

  • Veteran spinner Yuzvendra Chahal once used to be India's greatest bowling asset in the middle overs. Chahal, who can bamboozle the batters with his guile, can be a potent force with the ball in the middle overs.
  • In 69 ODI innings, Chahal has bagged 121 wickets, including two five-wicket hauls. Although he hasn't played a single ODI since January last year, his experience might help him make a comeback if Kuldeep misses out.

Varun Chakravarthy

  • If the Indian management decides against taking a backward step and bringing Chahal back, the Men in Blue might consider roping in Varun Chakravarthy as Kuldeep's replacement.
  • Chakravarthy has been absolutely brilliant since his comeback, scalping 17 international wickets in seven matches this year. Apart from his remarkable form, Gautam Gambhir's likeness for him might play a role in his ODI debut in the marquee tournament.

Ravi Bishnoi

  • Ravi Bishnoi could be another player who might benefit from Kuldeep's potential injury setback. He has been a regular face in the T20I setup and can outfox the opponents with his variations in the middle overs.
  • As India will likely pick finger spinners like Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi's wrist spin could ensure variety in their attack. The young spinner has played a single ODI and might make a comeback after two years.
