On Saturday, December 21, the 32nd edition of Vijay Hazare kickstarted with 38 teams locking horns against each other. Haryana are the defending champions, and it is a crucial tournament for the youngsters as this BCCI-organised annual domestic ODI event could serve as a trial ground ahead of the upcoming Champions Trophy in Pakistan.
This article will shed light on three out-of-favour India players who can return to the Indian team after shining in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy.
1. Shreyas Iyer
Iyer, who featured against Sri Lanka in the August 2024 series, hasn't played much international cricket in the last year after BCCI ousted him from the central contract. He is still uncertain about the middle order for the 2025 Champions Trophy despite being a crucial part of the 2023 World Cup.
While Iyer has shone with the bat in T20 tournaments and Ranji Trophy, he also needs to shine in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. It is worth noting that he has started the competition on a perfect note with a century against Karnataka. He smashed a fifty-ball hundred, striking the ball at a rate of 200. Thus, a solid show, and he would be a starter in the Indian team for the Champions Trophy 2025.
2. Ishan Kishan
Another out-of-favour player for India is Ishan Kishan. Similar to Shreyas Iyer, Kishan was also ousted from the central contract for breaching BCCI's trust in early 2024. Unlike Iyer, he didn't feature in a solitary game for India in 2024.
Nonetheless, Kishan has the chance to change his fortune and take the Vijay Hazare Trophy by storm. If he manages to end the tournament as the competition's leading-run getter then there would be no option left for the BCCI to select him in the Champions Trophy 2025 squad.
At present, Jharkhand is taking on Assam, and he has got off to a good start.
3. Yuzvendra Chahal
Chahal has emerged as one of the finest spinners in the country in the last five years. Recently, he bagged the highest contract by a spinner in IPL history. However, unfortunately, Chahal, who was once the leading figure in white-ball formats for India, hasn't represented India since August 2023.
It is a crucial event for Chahal as well, if he wants to show selectors that he is better than Kuldeep Yadav or can be his partner going into Champions Trophy 2025. Haryana are the defending champions, but Chahal has missed the first match against Gujarat.
