On Thursday, June 26, England were handed a boost after the ECB added Jofra Archer to the squad for the 2nd Test against India. After the first Test at Headingley, the caravan now moves to Edgbaston, where the visitors are yet to win a solitary red-ball game.

Now with Archer back in the mix, the Three Lions are also tasked with a big challenge to make a change in the playing XI despite a win in the curtain raiser. There is no hiding that Archer's place in the playing XI is a no-brainer as he hasn't been added to the squad to just warm the bench.

Talking about the first Test, all the bowlers did well and this article will shed light on who is the most likely to go out for the 2nd Test as Archer's replacement.

How Have The Bowlers Fared

England went with three key seamers - Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, and Josh Tongue for the first Test. The first parameter to judge would be to see which seamer was among the wickets.

Woakes stood last when it came to picking wickets as the star all-rounder had a solitary scalp in the Headingley Test. Meanwhile, Brydon Carse took four and Josh Tongue was the pick of the bowlers with seven wickets to his name.

What About Chris Woakes?

Woakes has lagged the wicket-taking ability, which is reflected in the first Test with one wicket. Talking about the stats, the right-arm seamer registered the figures of 0/103 in the first innings and 1/45 in the 2nd innings.

Let's look at Woakes wicket-taking performance in recent tournaments.

There is no denying that Woakes has not been among wickets, but what makes him specials is his ability to shine with the bat. Notably, in the recently, concluded Test, England were struggling in the first innings, but the star all-rounder played a valuable 38-runs knock.

What About Brydon Carse

Talking about the 29-year-old seamer, he has been among wickets and doing well for the Three Lions. In the first Test, he took four wickets, which includes getting KL Rahul out twice and also getting rid of Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill.

What makes him special is that all of his four wickets came against top-order batters and that too key stars of the Indian line-up. Lets look at his recent stats.

Thus, in the last three key Test series, Carse has done well and taken 31 wickets in 12 innings.

What About Josh Tongue

Tongue is the leading wicket-taker of the ongoing series after the first match as the 27-year-old has 7 wickets in two innings. He took a four-wicket haul in the first innings and a three-wicket haul in the next innings.

However, out of the seven dismissals, he dismissed none of the top-order batter and banked on lower middle-order and tail-enders as even gestured by Ben Stokes. Let's look at his recent stats.

Conclusion

While Tongue might be the leading wicket-taker of the series, but it is most likely that the right-arm seamer will sit out in the 2nd Test to make space for Jofra Archer. There are a few key points which led to the conclusion that Woakes and Carse should play ahead of Tongue.

Firstly, Woakes, despite taking just one wicket, adds a lot to the batting prowess and deepens the batting strength. Thus, to remove him from the playing XI, will weaken the Three Lions' batting structure, which they wouldn't like after a good win in the first Test, which also included Woakes' 38-runs knock.

Now Woakes, out of the picture, the reason why Carse should play is because of his ability to take wickets at the top. Out of his four wickets, all were top-order batters, who made most of the runs.

Meanwhile, Tongue on the other hand, has six wickets of lower middle-order, while only one at the top which was of Rishabh Pant in the first innings.
