On Tuesday, December 31, there were reports that the BCCI is planning to rest Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, and Rohit Sharma for the upcoming ODIs against England in January 2025. Notably, it will be the last series before Champions Trophy 2025.
While the reports added that a call on Rohit and Virat will be taken after a meeting with them, Bumrah missing the series is certain. It is worth noting that Bumrah's last ODI was back in the 2023 ODI World Cup final against Australia. Meanwhile, this article will talk about why the decision by BCCI is a masterstroke.
Bumrah Likely To Be Dropped For England ODIs
Jasprit Bumrah is undoubtedly India's best bowler at the moment. He has saved India from clutch situations and is continuing to do so as seen in the ongoing BGT, where he is the leading wicket-taker with 30+ scalps to his name in four Tests.
Thus, out of all the players, including Virat and Rohit, managing Bumrah's workload is of paramount interest. Being a fast bowler, it is not easy to play every match, and India cannot afford Bumrah to be injured with just 50 days left in the Champions Trophy.
Bumrah Rested Before T20 World Cup 2024 As Well
Thus, from a workload management point of view, it is crucial for Bumrah to be rested before the Champions Trophy, be it at the cost of resting him against England.
Further, the fans are concerned about Bumrah's match fitness since it has been more than a year since he has played an ODI. However, we can draw inspiration from T20 World Cup 2024. Bumrah was rested even before that and doubts were casted over his match readiness.
However, he proved everyone wrong and emerged as the tournament's best bowler and won the player of the tournament award with 15 wickets to his name.
