With just two days left for the all-important Indian Premier League (IPL) mega-auction, the franchises are gearing up for the two-day extravaganza on the 24th and 25th of November in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Teams are all set with their strategies and are in the final stages of preparation with 574 players on offer.
The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) side, despite a season they would want to forget, are now gearing up for a fresh start. They finished seventh after winning just seven games while losing seven, but with new strategies and potential player targets, they are ready to turn the tide. They have now decided to move ahead without their skipper KL Rahul, who has been released and is unlikely to wear this outfit again soon.
With as many as five players retained by the side, they will undoubtedly be looking for some all-rounders. Therefore, we'll look at some all-rounders who LSG can target in the auction:
Marcus Stoinis (Base Price- 2 Cr)
Why will LSG target Marcus Stoinis?
- Known as "the Hulk", Marcus Stoinis had an outstanding season with the Super Giants in 2024 with 388 runs at a strike rate of 147 while scalping four wickets with his medium pace. There is hardly any chance that the LSG will not go back to the Aussie smasher.
- Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis had been formidable in the middle-overs for LSG. With Pooran retained, Stoinis' comeback will re-unite this duo, who were destructive in the middle-overs.
- Stoinis is known to take the game away single-handedly from the opposition like he did against CSK with his remarkable 124* in a chase above 200 at Chepauk, where it is pretty challenging to score runs against the home side.
Washington Sundar (Base Price- 2 Cr)
Why will LSG target Washington Sundar?
- The right-arm off-spinner and a lower-order batter, Washington Sundar comes from Tamil Nadu with a ton of skills under his belt. Despite having an in-different season where he only played two games, the all-rounder is still in demand in the auction.
- Having previously tried Krunal Pandya, the LSG management would want to try someone different this time, with Sundar being the perfect replacement on the slow tracks of Lucknow.
- Sundar is an experienced customer after regularly featuring on the Indian side in different formats, proving his utility with both bat and ball in tough conditions at times.
Azmatullah Omarzai (Base Price- 1.5 Cr)
Why will LSG target Azmatullah Omarzai?
- The Afghanistani all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai has been a decent player in both departments in international cricket. His gentle, medium pace and strong hitting abilities make him an excellent asset for any side.
- Having only played seven IPL games so far, he would come in as a relatively new player in this arena after previously representing Gujarat Titans. Omarzai has done well for Afghanistan and could play a similar role for LSG in the future.
- Considering he is majorly untested in the IPL, Azmatullah could be a steal for the Lucknow side, helping them save some money, which could then be splurged on the other big players.
