In the latest turn of events, the Chennai Super Kings have pulled of a heist in the IPL 2025 mega auction. They managed to grab a steal deal as they bought the English all-rounder Sam Curran for INR 2.40 Cr.

Sam Curran Takes A 87% Pay Cut

Notably, Sam Curran was a part of the Punjab Kings for a cost of INR 18.5 Cr. This means that Sam Curran has taken a pay cut of INR (18.5-2.4)= 16.1 Cr. If we see this in percentage, then the pay cut taken by the all rounder is approximately 87%.

This so far stands as the biggest pay cut taken in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Now, the question might arise why Sam Curran was not bid for by any other team during the auction on the second day.

Why Sam Curran Got Sold For INR 2.4 Cr?

Overseas Slot Limitation - Most of the teams are sorted about the overseas players that they will use during the IPL 2025. The most number of overseas players that you can play in the final combination is only 4. This is one of the reasons that Sam Curran got sold for a low price.

IPL 2024 Performance - In IPL 2024, Sam Curran scored 270 runs in 13 matches at an average of 27.00 and a strike rate of 123.39. Besides, the English all-rounder also picked up 16 wickets but conceded runs at an economy of over 10. 

The numbers of Sam Curran look decent but because Punjab Kings did not do well in the tournament, his performance did not get highlighted. The perception that it was not a highly successful season for him might have been the reason that his price did not soar too high.

Even though Sam Curran has been average for the other IPL franchises, Sam Curran has done brilliantly for the Chennai Super Kings.

Sam Curran played in IPL 2020 and 2021 for the Chennai Super Kings. During his stint with the five time champions, Sam Curran played 23 matches and scored 242 runs in them at a strike rate of 142.35. Besides, Curran also picked up 22 wickets at an economy of 8.96 and a strike rate of 20.45.

If we look beyond the numbers, Curran also used in various roles with great success. Looking at the utility of the players, Curran looks like a brilliant addition to the CSK squad. With his batting abilities lower down the order and his ability to bowl important overs in the death, Curran looks like a steal dal at INR 2.40 Cr. 

Floater in the Batting line-up: Sam Curran can be used as a pinch hitter anywhere in the order. He can come up and stabilise the innings and then increase the scoring rate of the team with the demand of the situation.
