Making sense of Indian Premier League auction prices of different players can be a tricky task. There has been enough historical evidence that players can be hard done by with regard to what happens when they go under the hammer during an IPL auction.

South Africa batter David Miller is well within his right to feel the same way after being sold to Lucknow Super Giants for INR 7.5 crore. Having played the last three seasons for INR 3 crore each, Miller would be delighted to witness a 150% growth in his IPL salary.

Having said that, he could be a tad bit disappointed at seeing India batter Shreyas Iyer earning as much as INR 26.75 crore in spite of more franchises expressing interest in him. That being said, IPL auctions have never been fair.

Why Shreyas Iyer Earned More Than David Miller?

Miller, who will be playing for his fourth IPL team now, has been left behind financially primarily because of his nationality. Had he been an Indian player, Miller, with all his experience and laurels, would’ve surely earned more than the aforementioned amounts.

In all honesty, Iyer, as a title-winning campaign, was always going to bag a hefty amount in this mega auction. With Miller not offering in either captaincy or bowling departments, Iyer deserves to earn more than Miller as an Indian player.

Additionally, IPL 2024 was way more productive for him as a batter in comparison to Miller. Having said that, a gap as mammoth as INR 19.75 crore wasn't expected between the salaries of these two players.

David Miller Is A Better T20 Batter Than Shreyas Iyer

The fact that Miller is considered a better T20 batter than Iyer is his better average and strike rate in spite of playing double the number of matches. Playing the format since 2008, Miller averages and strikes at 34.74 and 137.57 respectively across 463 innings. Iyer, on the other hand, averages 33.09 and strikes at 132.57 across 210 innings.

While Miller has mostly batted at Nos. 4 and 5 in T20s, Iyer usually bats at Nos. 3 and 4. In their above mentioned most preferred positions, Miller’s 8,210 runs have come at an average of 36.16 and a strike rate of 140.60 including four centuries and 40 half-centuries.

On the contrary, Iyer has scored 4,318 runs at an average of 34.82 and a strike rate of 133.02 between Nos. 3 and 4.

Iyer, however, trumps Miller based on current form. In the last 12 months, the right-handed batter has scored 542 runs at an average of 49.27 and a strike rate of 159.41. In the same period, the left-handed batter has managed 1,147 runs at 29.41 and 128.15.
