Washington Sundar enjoyed a prolific series against the visiting New Zealanders, even though Team India crashed to a humiliating 0-3 defeat to register a rare whitewash at home. Sundar, who missed the series opener in Bengaluru, picked 16 wickets in the subsequent two Tests, including seven of them in the single innings of Pune to bag career-best Test figures.
The Indian off-spinner holds a seemingly humble personality, an observation that is now backed by his own elder sister and a cricketer herself, Shailaja. During a recent interview, Shailaja recalled memories of her brother’s performance against New Zealand, and noticed that he was not smiling enough to celebrate his wickets.
Washington Sundar’s sister sheds light on cricketer
In an interview with Rediff.com, Shailaja shed light on the humble personality of her brother Washington Sundar, and recalled her interaction with the Indian cricketer after he picked up a sizzling seven-fer against New Zealand in Pune back in October.
Shailaja said that she urged Washington to smile more to celebrate his wickets, and claimed that he only started smiling in Pune after having picked five to six wickets. She said:
“I told him, 'You literally didn't smile until you picked 5-6 wickets. You should enjoy because you know you are doing a wonderful job, you are performing really well. You should really enjoy the moment, and just celebrate it'. I could literally see him smiling. If you watch the highlights, you would notice him smiling after taking the sixth and seventh wicket only.”
The Pune Test against New Zealand in October also marked Washington Sundar’s return to India’s Test set up after a gap of three-and-a-half years. The 25-year-old picked up career-best figures of 7-59 from 23.1 overs in the first innings, and scalped another four New Zealand victims in the second half of the match.
Sundar recently took flight for Australia alongside the rest of his teammates for India’s upcoming five-match Test series against the hosts. The first of the five Tests is scheduled to be hosted by the Optus Stadium in Perth on November 22.
