After securing a memorable draw in the hectic Test series against England, India are gearing up for the Asia Cup 2025. The tournament, which will be played in the T20 format, starts on September 9, with Afghanistan taking on Hong Kong in the inaugural clash.

Regarding India, the 2023 edition champions will cross swords against the United Arab Emirates in their first game of the tournament. As the Asia Cup approaches, here are three Indian players who could get a T20I recall following their sublime performance in the IPL 2025 season.

1. Shreyas Iyer

  • T20I Stats: 1104 runs in 47 innings, Average - 30.7, Strike Rate - 136.1
  • Last T20I appearance: India vs Australia, December 3, 2023
  • IPL 2025 Stats: 604 runs in 17 innings, Average - 50.33, Strike Rate - 175.07

Why could India recall Shreyas Iyer in T20Is?

A reliable backup for Suryakumar Yadav

  • India's T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has yet to get fully fit after the sports hernia surgery. Although he has joined the NCA for rehabilitation, it won't be surprising if India adopts a cautious approach and uses him judiciously in the Asia Cup, keeping in mind the T20 World Cup next year.
  • In such a scenario, Shreyas Iyer could be a strong candidate to make his T20I comeback as a backup for the talismanic T20 batter.

Red-hot form and leadership skills

  • Shreyas Iyer has improved his game against raw pace. In the IPL 2025, the Mumbaikar hammered 397 runs against all types of pacers at an average of 44.1 and a blistering strike rate of 188.2.
  • He also led PBKS to the IPL final after 11 years, having lifted the title with KKR in the previous season. His success as an IPL skipper signifies his ability to read the T20 game, which is why he could be a valuable asset for India in the Asia Cup.

2. Prasidh Krishna

  • T20I Stats: 8 wickets in 5 matches, Average - 27.5, Strike Rate - 15, Economy - 11
  • Last T20I appearance: India vs Australia, November 28, 2023
  • IPL 2025 Stats: 25 wickets in 15 matches, Average - 19.52, Strike Rate - 14.16, Economy - 8.27

Why could India recall Prasidh Krishna in T20Is?

As a replacement for Bumrah

  • Several reports have claimed that Jasprit Bumrah could be rested for the Asia Cup to manage his workload.
  • In such a scenario, Prasidh Krishna is worth considering as his replacement. His extra pace and ability to hit the deck could ensure variety in the Indian attack, making him an ideal replacement for Bumrah.

Excellent form, superb middle-overs enforcer

  • Prasidh Krishna emerged as the most successful bowler in the IPL 2025, scalping 25 wickets in 15 games.
  • He was particularly successful in the middle overs, bagging seven wickets at a magnificent economy of 6.75. So, with Arshdeep leading the attack in powerplay, Prasidh can be a valuable addition to the Indian team in the middle phase.

3. Shubman Gill

  • T20I Stats: 578 runs in 21 innings, Average - 30.4, Strike Rate - 139.3
  • Last T20I appearance: India vs Sri Lanka, July 30, 2024
  • IPL 2025 Stats: 650 runs in 15 innings, Average - 50, Strike Rate - 155.87

Why could India recall Shubman Gill in T20Is?

Reliable backup opener for Samson and Abhishek

  • Although India have formed an explosive opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson in T20Is, both these batters play an aggressive brand of cricket and hence don't give that much assurance at the top order.
  • Gill, on the other hand, superbly anchors the innings and can chip in as an opener if one of these two players records a string of failures in the Asia Cup. Thus, he can also get an opportunity to present his case for inclusion in India's T20 World Cup squad

Future leadership option

  • Suryakumar Yadav is 34 and has sustained multiple injury setbacks of late. So, the 2026 T20 World Cup could be his final major tournament in Indian colours, and the Men in Blue could start searching for his successor after the mega event.
  • Shubman Gill recently showcased his leadership qualities in the IPL 2025, powering GT's average squad to the playoffs. He also grabbed the limelight by drawing the Test series in England; so, if India sees a T20I captaincy option in him, they might recall him for the Asia Cup.
