Facing each other regularly in limited-overs cricket in the past decade, New Zealand and Sri Lanka resume their understated rivalry in a must-win clash of the ICC World Cup 2023 in Bangalore on Thursday (November 9). The two nations collide with a win necessary for their present and future ambitions at both the ongoing marquee tournament in India and the Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.

The BlackCaps, placed fourth in the World Cup standings after four wins and as many defeats during the league stage, require a victory desperately to keep their semifinals contention alive. If they fail to upstage the Lankan Lions, New Zealand would be in serious danger of missing out if Pakistan go on to drown the struggling Englishmen later on.

From Sri Lanka's perspective, their dreams of reclaiming the World Cup trophy may have entirely vanished after suffering a horrific 2-6 losing split, but the 1996 champions still have qualification in the next ICC 50-over event in Pakistan to play for. A win could ensure they don't slip down to the bottom two spots in the World Cup standings and avoid the embarrassment of missing out on an ICC tournament for the first time.

New Zealand vs Sri Lanka Head-to-Head Record in ODIs

New Zealand-Sri Lanka has always been one of cricket's close-fought rivalries in One-Day Internationals history. The BlackCaps, who played their first-ever ODI against the Lankan Lions at the 1979 edition of the World Cup in England, have clinched 51 victories in 101 ODIs the two nations have competed in. But the Island nation isn't one to be left far behind, winning 41 of the remaining games.
